The Cost of Cyber Inaction
Relentless Growth in Cyber Threat Activity
Cyber incidents in Australia are now constant, costly, and accelerating. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recorded over 84,700 cybercrime reports in 2024–25, equating to one attack every six minutes, alongside more than 1,200 serious incidents, an 11% increase year on year.
This volume highlights that cyber risk is not hypothetical. It is an operational certainty affecting businesses of all sizes across NSW and nationally.
Escalating Financial Impact on Businesses
The financial impact is significant and rising. The average cost of cybercrime to Australian businesses has surged, with small businesses reporting around $56,600 per incident and broader averages reaching over $80,000, increasing sharply year on year.
For larger organisations, impacts can exceed $200,000 per incident, driven by ransomware, downtime, legal exposure, and recovery costs. These figures exclude secondary losses such as missed contracts, increased insurance, and long term reputational damage.
Operational Disruption and Market Consequences
Beyond cost, the strategic impact is severe. Cyber incidents disrupt operations, erode trust, and increasingly determine market eligibility. The ACSC notes that attacks are targeting businesses, critical infrastructure, and supply chains, while regulatory and defence requirements continue to tighten.
Organisations that fail to meet baseline security expectations risk exclusion from government and defence work, prolonged operational disruption, and lasting damage to brand and stakeholder confidence.
